Skip Hire Costs in Liverpool
Hiring a skip shouldn’t be complicated. At Skips Liverpool, we believe in transparent pricing. The cost of your skip hire depends on three main factors:
- The size of the skip
- The type of waste
- Where the skip will be placed
Skip hire costs
Hiring a skip from us gives you a few size options. Here’s what they cost:
- 2 tonne skip: Book this skip from £145 including VAT
- 4 tonne skip: Book this skip from £160 including VAT
- 8 tonne skip: Book this skip from £240 including VAT
Permit costs and placement
Where you store your skip will impact the final price you pay.
- On private land (driveways/gardens): If the skip is kept entirely on your own property, there is no permit fee. This is the most cost-effective way to hire a skip.
- On public roads: If you don’t have a driveway and need a skip placed on the road or a grass verge, you will require a skip permit from your local council.
Current permit cost
Skip permits are approximately £40 to £48 for a standard 7-day period.
We can handle the permit application for you to ensure your hire is fully legal and compliant with local highway regulations.
Small note: Make sure your skip is picked up before your permit expires, or you risk a fine.
Skip size and capacity guide
Choosing the right size skip is the best way to save money. Overfilling a skip can lead to extra charges, while hiring one that is too large means you’re paying for empty space.
| Skip size | Approx. tonnage | Capacity (bin bags) | Best used for |
| 2 Yard | 1.5 – 2 tonnes | 20 – 30 bags | Small garden tidies, minor DIY, or declutters |
| 4 Yard | 3 – 4 tonnes | 40-50 bags | Bathroom refits, small kitchen renovations and heavier waste |
| 8 Yard | 6-8 tonnes | 60 – 80 bags | The ‘standard’ builder skip. Ideal for major renovations or heavy soil/rubble. |
Understanding tonnage vs volume
Skips are typically ordered by size (cubic yards), but they have their own weight limits (tonnage) to ensure they’re safe during transport.
- Heavy waste: For soil, bricks, concrete, and hardcore, we recommend nothing larger than a 8-yard skip. Larger skips can become too heavy for the vehicle to lift if filled with dense materials.
- Light waste: Large 12-yard skips are ideal to get rid of light bulky waste like cardboard, wood and old furniture where you need volume rather than weight capacity.
Prohibited items
To keep your costs low, ensure your skip does not contain hazardous materials which need specialist disposal. Common items that may incur extra fees or are prohibited include:
- Asbestos
- Batteries and chemicals
- Fridges/Freezers
- Tyres
- Plasterboard (must be separated)

FAQs
Do I need a permit?
You don’t need a skip permit if it’s going to be placed on your driveway or other private land. You do need a permit if the skip is placed on public land, such as road, pavement, or grass verge.
How long can I keep the skip?
Skips are typically hired for up to 7 days. If you need to extend the hire, please let us know at the time of booking.
What if I overfill it?
Skips should not be overfilled as loads need to be kept within a safe level. There are fill lines indicated on each of our skips. Follow our size guide to get the right skip for what you need.
